The Jaquie Brown Odyssey
New Zealand / 2010 / Gerard Johnstone / 8 x half hour series mins
The Jaquie Brown Odyssey is the sequel to the successful New Zealand sitcom, The Jaquie Brown Diaries, which follows the trials and tribulations of a C-grade celebrity struggling to find her place in the media world.
Jaquie Brown is a well-known TV presenter in New Zealand who plays a fictitious version of herself on the show, hungry for fame and prepared to do whatever it takes to get there. She is constantly thwarted by her slightly prettier, slightly funnier and vastly more popular nemesis, Serita Singh.
Since losing her job on McHuntly at 7 for trying to get Serita fired, Jaquie has hit rock bottom.
Her and Tom have traded their Cox' Bay dream home for a crappy inner city apartment and she has been whoring her dwindling celebrity status to a carpet factory to pay the bills. Meanwhile, Serita has gone on to become one of TV3's most valued assets, has her own show coming out and a top ten single.
Jaquie's only chance to climb back up the media ladder is co-hosting gig in midday radio show with the equally bitter and even more disgruntled James Coleman. Working with James is a nightmare and Jaquie is desperate to get back on TV, but even with the help of friend and publicist Kim Sharee, the opportunities seem few and far between.
"Best TV show on TV" - Steve Braunias, Sunday Star Times
"The Jaquie Brown Diaries has evolved from a promising first series to become a razor sharp satire on insecurity, fame, small-pond hipsters and of course, television itself" - Grand Smithies, Escape
