Match & Marry
USA / 2007 / Suzannah Warlick / 48 mins
"Match & Marry" offers a fun look at the ancient tradition of matchmaking. Many of us will recall the generational clash that took place in the musical, Fiddler on the Roof when the poor milkman Tevye and his wife Golde attempted to matchmake their eldest daughter with the aging but wealthy village tailor. Although the practice still exists in some cultures, it has gradually disappeared over time in favour of modern-day dating.
Director Suzannah Warlick enters the bustling metropolis of New York to see how this dying tradition has been preserved within the Orthodox
Jewish community and is flourishing in the present-day.
Match & Marry explores how the profession of matchmaking is being carried out today, and looks at the philosophy behind the practice. Warlick shares the humorous insights of Jewish matchmakers, or “Yentas” as they are affectionately known and the couples they try and matchmake. The matchmakers tell us what they really think about the couples who approach them to help find the perfect mate and the couples who are set up share hilarious tales about their first meetings
with their spouses to be.
Filmed mainly in Brooklyn and Manhattan, this documentary highlights dating tales and anecdotes, whilst offering wisdom and insights on marriage and romance in the 21st century. Match & Marry is an entertaining, documentary about a hidden community that delivers on universal themes about love and the challenges of connecting in the modern world.
